I have setup a device.backup.running config and that is working ok. When I add the use alternate command for a cisco router and use the "show ip arp" command the process just hangs and comes back with an error "failed to receive current configuration line in device config file. Will this work or do you need to use the activity "report.arp table. Also it fails to send an email out for the report on this activity.
Cat Tools alternate command
CatTools and Fortigate Firewalls
Hi All,
I see that CatTools can backup Fortigate OS devices. I have 10 or so Fortigate Firewalls which I'd like to backup. But before I set this up I was trying to find out what commands CatTools issues to get the configuration just to check I'm not going to do any damage to my devices as they are hunreds of miles away from me. I'm running ver 3.2.19. Anyone have any idea or can point me in the right dorection to find out.
Thanks
Jimbo
Best Practice config (or tool) when 1 switch in Cisco stack fails
I just downloaded KIWI and so I don't reinvent the wheel, does anyone know what the Best Practice config would look like to alert me when "one" switch in a Cisco stack of switches fails?
Kiwi CatTools v3.9.1 SR is Now Available
You can find the installation package in your customer portal. This service release fixes a problem with SSH2 connections.

Cannot write to log file
I am using the evaluation version but cannot get log messages from our routers to write to the specified log file or the display. I can write to the display and log when using the test option. In the error log i see "Service running, but Service/Manager comm link is not connecting" and "Unable to connect to Service socket on TCP port 3300"
IP connectivity is good, also I have tried restarting the service and rebooting my machine without any success.

Backing up Alcatel OmniSwitch with CatTools
HI guys,
I have been trying to backup up my OmniSwitches (6850 p48 variants) with CatTools.
The built in device is for omnistacks which doesn't work (Omniswitches don't have an enable mode) so I started to write my own template.
I can get CatTools to log in and dump the config, however only half the config is dumped.
Initially it appeared it was because CatTools was seeing the session prompt command in the config and flushed everything after it because of bCleanBuffer option in the SendCommandSingle() function.
I changed the GetConfig() function so that it when it calls the SendCommandSingle() function it is passing false to the bCleanBuffer to try and stop the above, however this only gave me a few extra lines of the config and it is still missing most of the config.
Now I am pretty much stuck!
Any pointers as to why this might be happening?
Edit: Ok, setting the bCleanBuffer helps (stops it clearing everything after the session prompt) but another part of the function s seeing it and then runs the exit command which is why I get a few more lines. Investigation
Comparing Procurve config to a standard template?
We are deploying a new network, and testing CatTools to see what it will do. We have about 150 Procurve 2620's as layer 2 edge switches that will be configured for the same purpose. I would like to compare each startup (or running) config to the standard template to ensure they've all been configured correctly. They should all match the template except for hostname, mgmt IP, and one VLAN. I would like to have a report just like "Device.Backup.Running Config" produces, except comparing to the device config to the standard template rather than the last backup.
I tried using a "Report.Compare.Two files" activity, and in the "File 1" field I tried using the filename variables such as %AppPath%, %GroupName% and %DeviceName% to point to the lastest backup in the Configs folder. Since these variables only get resolved at activity initiation it doesn't work.
Is there a way to accomplish this? I would have thought this was a prime target for that compare two files activity.
Thanks,
Fred
SonicWALL Configuration Backup is plain text file (was expecting .exp)
We're trying out CatTools as a centralized config management solution for a few hundred SonicWALL appliances, and have run into a bit of a problem.
We can add devices to CatTools, and run the Device.Backup.Running Config activity against them, but the file that the activity creates isn't in the format I thought it would be. Our techs will be expecting an encoded .exp file in the event they need to restore a config, not a plaintext file. Are there custom scripts/activities required to back up a config this way? I feel like the answer is probably "yes", but I haven't yet located an example.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting this to work?

HP Procurve - Compare Start Vs Run
I am trying to get CatTools to do Startup vs Run Configuration comparison on our HP procurve 2600, 5400, 2900, Etc Switches.
I have managed to do a standard backup with the device set as "HP.SWITCH.2500" (even though these are not 2500's)
But "2500" is not supported for Start-vs-Run
So I tried "HP.Switch.Others" but after trying many combinations of commands and variations I can't get it to pull both configs.
Has anybody got it to work? I would have thought the Procurve would be well supported and it's easy to pull both the Startup and Running Configs with CatTools but not with "Compare"
Cheers

Backup Extreme Summit switches using TFTP commands
Hi, We have just installed some extreme switches and currently
it is backing up using model X450-24X running the show configuration command.
We are wanting to run the following below command and wondered whether this
would be possible if we had a variations file and running a TFTP server on
server where cat tools is installed.
tftp put x.x.x.x vr "VR-Default"primary.cfg **Saved file name***.cfg
The above command makes it easier to restore configs if we were to have issues.
We tried running Device.Backup.TFTP activity but it currently only supports Cisco Devices.
Thanks
HP Procurve configuration backup using SSH problem
Hello,
We have an HP Procurve J4903A Switch 2824 and it is integrated with RADIUS Server for authentication.
We are using Cat Tools 3.4 demo version and tried to configure the switch for configuraton backup using Method SSH2.
And using Device.Backup.Running Config  Type and SSH Username/Password are supplied. When Run the backup it shows the errors:
"Did not receive expected prompt when entering enable mode", and "Aborting: Unable to enter enable mode".
Do anybody faced this issue with SSH? Please help me to solve this problem.

Allied Telesis x600 & x908 switches
Hi All,
Has anyone got KiwiCatTools backing up config's with the above switches that are running AW+ OS?
I've tried device of ATI.Router.general and get "Failed to receive '# SYSTEM configuration' line in device config file" and if I try Cisco.router.general (apparently the new AlliedWare + is Cisco like...) I get "Login failed"
Cheers
Steve
PS Can telnet to device using confgured username / password
Problems Logging into HP Procurve switches running version 10.74 code.
When i use cattools to access my HP Procurve 2626 and 2650 Swiches, I get failures being caused by a inital login line that is not accounted for in the Cattools configuration. When you log into the switches you get a splash screen that says press any key to continue and then you get the login screen. HOw can I create a script to enter a character and wait so that Cattools can login correctly? I ahve been told the splash screen can not be disabled. So when telnetting to the switch the 1st screen is not the username prompt.
HP Procurve Switches - Compare running startup activity
It would be great if you could add compare report activities on HP switches.
It should not be a big development as device is already supported with backup running configuration. All should be done is to adapt the command and the start of the startup configuration capture.
Command : show config
Output Result :
Startup configuration:
; ModelNumber Configuration Editor; Created on release #FirmwareVersion

Kiwi Cat - "Custom.Device.Template.txt" file required
We are trying to get Kiwi Cat to backup Aruba devices which are not supported with the version of Kiwi Cat we are currently running. We have managed to create a custom device (.ini) for the Aruba, but unfortunately we don't have the custom.device.template.txt file which we need for creating a custom device script file, we are now stuck and unable to proceed any further.
Is anyone willing to give us a copy of the "Custom.Device.Template.txt" file or better still if someone out there has got Aruba backing up the script file for the Aruba.
We are running Kiwi Cat version 3.2.13
Once again thanks.

Fortinet Fortigate Backups via TFTP
Hi
I have managed to get a full back of a Fortigate firewall working using TFTP and I thought I would share how I did it with the community.
We have a pair of Fortigates 3600C and we run multiple VDOMs on these, this meant the default script withing Cattools didn't work for us. We also require a keystroke before logging in as well. All this meant I had to use a combination of variations and also the TFTP backup method.
Variations configuration
- Add your devices using the "Generic.Device" type, this will allow you to use "Variations"
- Give them a group name - it is well worth using the same group name for all Fortinets as this will allow you to apply the same variations to all devices within that "Group"
- Fill in the rest of the device info and passwords as you would do normally
- Go to the "variations" tab and click "use variations"
- Go to the "prompts" tab and fill in the information as shown in the "qoutes":-
DEVICE_USERNAMEPROMPT = "login as:"
DEVICE_PASSWORDPROMPT = "password:"
DEVICE_STANDARDPROMPT = "#"
DEVICE_PRIVILEGEDPROMPT = "#"
DEVICE_CONFIGPROMPT = "(global) #"
- Go to the "additional commands" tab and fill in the information as shown in the "qoutes":-
COMMAND_ENTERCONFIG = "configure global"
COMMAND_EXITCONFIG = "end"
- Go to the "pre/post login" tab and fill in the information as shown in the "qoutes":-
- NOTE: you may not need to do this if you aren't asking for a pre login key stroke.
PRE_LOGIN_MESSAGE = "(Press 'a' to accept):"
PRE_LOGIN_KEYSTROKE = "a"
- Then click on the "group save" button as this will then save the changes to the group you specified. This will allow you to add more devices to this group and it will pre-populate the variations for you. This saves a lot of work in the future.
TFTP activity configuration
- Go to activities and click add
- Set Type to "Device.Backup.TFTP"
- Fill in name and description
- Set schedule under the time tab
- Add your devices
- Go to "Options" tab
- Untick the "file to write to tftp server"
- Untick the "enter commands in enable mode"
- In the "optional alternative list of commands" section input the following:-
%ctUM: Timeout 100
%ctUM: EchoOff
config global
%ctUM: EchoOff
execute backup config tftp %ctDeviceName-Running-Config <input your IP Address>
%ctUM: EchoOff
- If your not using the default file locations don't forget to change them, I got caught out on this. Mine look like:-
F:\CatTools2\Configs\%GroupName%\Config.Current.Running.%BaseFile%.txt
F:\CatTools2\Configs\Archives\%GroupName%\Config.Dated.Running.%BaseFile%.%DateISO%-%TimeHHMM%.txt
- Click ok to save
Now run the activity to check it all works. What you will find is there is about a 5 minute delay where it shows as a busy task. Be patient as it will finish. I would recommend running this task outside of any other backups as it does take a bit longer than others.
Hope this helps others getting this working.
EDIT
I have updated this to change from using the command "execute backup full-config" to use "execute backup config". This is because we had an issue recently where we were unable to restore the backup taking using the "execute backup full-config" command.
Fortinet recommend using the "execute backup config" command as this just restores the configuration that has been changed.
I have now tested this on our lab device and I was able to restore the configuration successfully.
Cheers
Jay
